Dear Pang-Yen, Time does fly, doesn’t it. Soon you shall bid farewell to Oxford, returning to the land that’s nurtured you for over thirty years. I still vividly remember three years ago, beneath the mid-autumn moon, you casually sang at my place—little did we know it’d prelude our first concert together. And just a few months back, you also quite out of the blue mentioned Wei-Pin Chen’s ‘Lô-chúi-khoe, the turbid stream’. I then realise nothing is better than music to postlude this moment of farewell. Over my eight years in Oxford, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet so many wonderful Taiwanese friends like you—people who’ve brightened my days like bursts of candlelight. And I always set foot on this magnificent land called Taiwan when you’re not around, soaking in its beauty and imagining the stories of your growing up. Whenever I’m missing you all, I always write postcards. These little notes always begin with “Dear ______ ,”. As my favourite in Oxford, you’ve probably got more of those “Dear ______ ,” than anyone else. Dear ______ , ties into the recitals that I have curated: Sojourner (2017), Non omnis moriar (2018), 6000 Miles Away (2019), and Die Un trennbaren (2023). They form a series that ponders about what journeys, connections, and distances mean to us. I am very grateful to Yu-Wen and Min-Erh for their enduring support and blessings. I also thank everyone who comes and shares in this moment as we pour our hearts into the music. I am specially indebted to Wei-Pin Chen for kindly letting us perform his work, otherwise this recital would have lost all meanings. Pang-Yen, I keep picturing the years ahead, with us far apart. I imagine the tungoil trees blossoming every April and May, when spring is always by your side. I’ll write you letters after letters, leave footsteps after footsteps on your land, and get to know you again and again.
